E-Bikes

Class 1 is pedal-assist only, with the motor cutting out at 20 mph. Class 2 adds a throttle you can ride without pedaling, also capped at 20 mph. Class 3 is pedal-assist up to 28 mph and usually includes a speedometer. The class matters most for trail access — many bike paths and singletrack systems allow Class 1 while restricting throttle-equipped and higher-speed models.

Manufacturer range figures come from ideal conditions: flat ground, light rider, moderate temperature, lowest assist setting. Real range depends on rider and cargo weight, terrain, wind, tire pressure, temperature, and how much assist you use. A bike rated for 50 miles may deliver 25–30 on hilly terrain in higher assist. Battery capacity in watt-hours is the more honest number to compare across models.

Hub motors sit in the wheel, cost less, and run quietly — a good fit for flat terrain, commuting, and casual riding. Mid-drive motors sit at the crank and use the bike's gears, which gives noticeably better climbing torque, more balanced handling, and better range efficiency on hills. If you're riding steep or loose terrain, a mid-drive is worth the premium. If you're mostly on pavement and moderate grades, a hub motor does the job for less.

Most e-bike batteries hold up for roughly 500–1,000 full charge cycles before capacity drops noticeably — typically three to five years of regular riding. You'll lose range gradually rather than all at once. Replacements generally run a few hundred dollars depending on capacity and whether the pack is proprietary to the frame. Storing the bike indoors, avoiding charges to 100% when you don't need the full range, and keeping the battery out of freezing temperatures all extend its life.
